Description of Our Social Skills Group
Our groups will meet weekly for 5 weeks beginning June 15, 2022. Sessions will be 50 minutes in length and include one parent educational session mid way through. Sessions will be led by two ASHA certified speech language pathologists. There will be a maximum of four students per group.
Common questions:
1.What is the make-up of the group? Ideally, we would like for parents to give us a preference for which group works for them/their schedule. The practice will then inform the parents no later than June 1st of which time their child will be slotted for which will be determined based on age and needs of the children. There will be a mix of groups ages 4-5 and young school age (kindergarten/first grade), and if there is interest the last group will be rising second/third graders or a 3-4 age group. The times of the groups will be 4:15, 5:15. 6:15.
2. Does my child need a diagnosis? All children can participate, not just children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. The COVID-19 pandemic significantly impeded the ability for our children to gain crucial social skills and our goal is to support our children in this area.
3.What is the curriculum of each group/level? Game play will be incorporated into each group but will be a primary focus in the younger groups. Winning and losing will also be an area of focus as we incorporate turn taking and group game play. Parents will receive a weekly written note to review topics, key language to use for generalization at home, and ideas to incorporate skill into life outside of therapy.
